Bon Air Takes You Back in Time

Travel back in time by attending the Bon Air Victorian Days celebration. The week-long event highlights the late 1800s, when Bon Air served as a popular community gathering spot and place to have afternoon tea. The Bon Air Library will host an ice cream social, lectures, concerts and an exhibit. 

Saturday, May 6

Book Sale • 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
with the Friends of the Chesterfield County Public Library.

Ice Cream Social • 10 a.m.-noon
Free ice cream!

Children's Craft • 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

“Little Women” • Noon-12:30 p.m.
presented by Chesterfield Children’s Theatre

Lego Club • 1-3 p.m.
Build a Victorian mansion.

Monday, May 8

Hazen Memorial Lecture: Poe’s Richmond Revealed • 7-8 p.m.
Although Edgar Allan Poe grew up, began his journalistic career, married, and spent a third of his life in Richmond, only a few traces of his presence can be found in Central Virginia. Fortunately, important discoveries of long-lost letters and artifacts — as well as scientific investigative techniques — are shining new light on Poe’s hidden history. Join Poe Museum Curator Chris Semtner as we search for clues to the mysteries surrounding Poe’s childhood, his marriage and the inspiration behind some of his greatest literary works.

Tuesday, May 9

The Secret Language of Flowers and Fans • 7-8 p.m.
Learn how flowers and fans were used to communicate in the Victorian era. Historical storyteller Deborah Alsko will reveal the secret and subtle details.

Wednesday, May 10

The Banjo in Victorian America • 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Carson Hudson, accomplished musician and historian, will play a variety of reproduction instruments as he demonstrates early banjos and the music that appealed to Victorian America.

Thursday, May 11

The Etiquette of Victorian Dress • 3-4 p.m.
Journey through a typical day in the life of an upper class Gilded Age family with Nancy Lowden, Manager of Historical Programs at Maymont Mansion. Guests may dress in Victorian costume or wear a hat and gloves.

Saturday, May 13

Bon Air Historical Society presents Bon Air Victorian Day Parade and Festival
Parade: 11 a.m.-noon
Festival: Noon-3 p.m.

The parade route runs from Bon Air Baptist Church to Bon Air Christian Church on Buford Road. Bon Air Library staff and Friends of the Library will walk in the parade to the festival at Bon Air Christian Church. Join the Friends of the Library for a special book sale at the festival!
