3-D Printing

Chesterfield County Public Library offers a makerspace with 3-D printers that are available to customers with a valid library card. Customers who wish to use the 3-D printer should first contact their library and make an appointment.

3D printers like the ones at the library are similar to traditional printers, but instead of printing text on paper, they shape plastic filament into solid objects. CCPL’s 3-D printers utilize polylactic acid, or PLA, which is made from renewable resources such as corn starch. Customers are currently using the 3-D printers to create toys, artwork, jewelry, parts for building robots and components for prosthetic hands. What could you make with the 3-D printer? Come by the makerspace and find out!

Support the Makerspace

Makerspaces, sometimes referred to as hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs, are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. In libraries they often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and more. Some also have metalworking, woodworking, and traditional arts and crafts equipment available. They are used by schools and libraries to provide valuable skills in math and engineering to children and patrons of all ages.

Our Makerspace is a hands-on environment for collaboration and team learning as well as individual creation. You are invited to create, invent, and learn using our 3D printers, software, electronics, and craft tools.

Some of the skills and knowledge we are looking for include:

  • Computer programming tools for kids such as Scratch, Blockly, Ardublocks, Game Salad
  • Microcontrollers: Arduino, LilyPad, Flora, Raspberry Pi
  • LEGO robotics: Mindstorms, WeDo, StoryStarter
  • MaKey MaKey & littleBits
  • 3D printing: Tinkercad, Blender, SketchUp, Autodesk and 3D printing hardware
  • Game design: analog & video games
  • Minecraft: Redstone engineers needed!
  • Stop-motion movie making & editing: iMovie, Moviemaker, Final Cut, etc.
  • Crafting, designing, building, hacking, and making in general

If you are interested in supporting our makerspace through donation of materials, time or money, please contact Jennifer Hayek by phone 804-748-1763 or by email hayekj@chesterfield.gov.
