Early Literacy and School Readiness

Kindergarten sure isn't what it used to be! Parents, did you know that children are expected to have certain basic literacy skills even BEFORE they enter school? Are you and your child ready? Let our librarians lead you and your children in weekly storytelling journeys that will not only teach them to love reading and literature, but will help them learn letter awareness and knowledge of letter sounds and spelling through rhyme, music and interactive fun!

Kids are tested before they enter school through the PALS-K screen. PALS-K is a measure of children’s knowledge of several important literacy fundamentals: phonological awareness, alphabet recognition, concept of word, knowledge of letter sounds and spelling. This test provides a comprehensive assessment of young children’s knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. PALS is the state-provided screening tool for Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) and is used by 99% of school divisions in the state on a voluntary basis.

Sound intimidating? Don't worry. Each week, our story time will focus on one of these skills, and we'll tell you more about it in understandable language. Parents, we know it’s not easy to consistently engage your children in fun learning moments. Our librarians will model easy behaviors that you can adopt at home – behaviors that can make all the difference in those early years.

We are developing our story times in partnership with early childhood educators so that each week, your child will come away with a new learning outcome. As an added benefit, your child will be around other children in a learning environment while you connect with other caretakers.  Times and locations can be found here.

In addition, every CCPL location has an Early Literacy Activity Center with educational toys and games because play helps children develop their language and pre-reading skills. CCPL also provides free programs to assist in early childhood literacy. To take advantage of these programs check Loud & Clear, our events magazine.
