The library is a hub for tools and resources that make it easier to manage medical conditions, strengthen your body, and build connections among friends, family, and caregivers. Our partnerships with government agencies such as the Chesterfield County Health Department offer us first-hand access to the latest and most accurate health news. And our librarians are here to offer you personalized and confidential learning assistance and guidance.

Resources for Children 


Be healthy! it's a girl thing : food fitness and feeling great / Lilian Cheung, and Mavis Jukes. C2003 - A guide for adolescent girls on how to stay healthy and fit, with information on nutrition and exercise. 

What's so yummy? all about eating well and feeling good / Robie H. Harris ; illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott. C2014 - Funny, and accessible illustrations and matter-of-fact text combine to show young children how food fuels our bodies — and help them see how healthy eating and drinking, and being active, can make them feel their best for a day full of fun.

The monster health book : a guide to eating healthy, being active & feeling great for monsters & kids! / Edward Miller. C2006 - Provides guidance for choosing the right kinds and portions of food for staying fit, and includes a discussion about getting proper rest and exercise and developing healthy habits.

Oh the things you can do that are good for you! / Tish Rabe ; illustrated by Aristides Ruiz. C2001 - The Cat in the Hat takes children to the Feeling Great Clinic, where they learn about exercise, germs, healthy eating, and playing safely.

The care & keeping of you : the body book for younger girls / Valorie Schaefer ; Cara Natterson, MD, medical consultant ; illustrated by Josee Masse. C2012 - Features tips, how-tos, and facts from the experts. You'll find answers to questions about your changing body, from hair care to healthy eating, bad breath to bras, periods to pimples, and everything in between.


Whole Kids Foundation.  Includes information on simple, affordable, healthy meals that are easy enough for any family. Information in this site can be used at home or in the classroom; it also includes games, coloring sheets, and a Kid’s Book Club. 


Super Kids Nutrition.  Offers activities such as The Super Crew’s Nutrition Adventures, and other age and grade-specific resources.  All materials are available in both English and Spanish.  Coloring sheets and games can be downloaded.  Recipes include such items as breakfast milkshakes and healthy snacks. 


Food Fun from Apples to Zucchini. (Also available in Spanish)  This website, maintained by the University of Illinois Extension, offers facts and activities for young children, older children, and teachers.  The site is interactive, and allows users to color fruits and vegetables online. 


Healthy Eating Made Easier. Kid’s Games and Activities.  This site was prepared by the Dairy Council of California, and includes online games about nutrition and healthy eating.  Participants can build a pizza, create a healthy breakfast, or play other healthy food-related games. 


Mission Nutrition Game.  Produced by KidsHealth.org, this game lets children choose nutritious foods from a variety of sources in the kitchen—the refrigerator, the pantry, a fruit bowl, etc. 


 Resources for Teens 


Health smarts : how to eat right, stay fit, make positive choices, and more / Matt Doeden. C2013 - Offers tips for leading a healthier life, discussing the importance of getting enough sleep; eating healthy and exercising; and the physical effects of using drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

Paleo Girl / Leslie Klenke. C2014 - Presents a health, fitness, and lifestyle survival guide for teenagers that includes a seven-day paleo eating guide, stretching and exercise moves, and how a paleo lifestyle can affect puberty.

 You, the owner's manual for teens : a guide to a healthy body and happy life / Michael F. Roizen, Mehmet C. Oz, and Ellen Rome ; with Ted Spiker ... [et al.] ; illustrations by Gary Hallgren. C2011 - Presents health-related information to help teens navigate the adolescent years.

Seventeen presents 500 health & fitness tips / C2009 - Provides advice for teenage girls on diet and exercise, including suggestions for healthier snack and fast food choices and more than thirty workout routines designed by fitness experts.

What the Fork are You Eating? / Stephanie Sacks. C2014 - A practical guide written by a certified chef and nutritionist which tells us exactly what the most offensive ingredients in our food are and how we can remove (or at least minimize) them in our diets.

100 Days of Real Food: How We Did It, What We Learned, and 100 Easy, Wholesome Recipes Your Family Will Love / Lisa Leake. C2014 - The creator of a hugely popular blog offers simple, affordable, family-friendly recipes and practical advice for eliminating processed foods from your family’s diet.

AARP New American Diet / C2013 - Offers nutrition basics, diet guidelines, and meal plans.

 Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition / Colin Campbell. C2013 - The China Study revealed what we should eat—“Whole” answers the question of why a whole-food, plant-based diet provides optimal nutrition.


This site from the US Department of Agriculture offers daily food plans and healthy eating on a budget tips.


Has many resources, including guides for eating vegetarian and eating for exercise and sports.


Allows you to find nutrient information on over 8,000 foods.
